Janet M. Moreland, Author & Poet

A native of Ohio, Janet M. Moreland is a Nevada resident who is a poet, novelist, and short story writer. She is of Cherokee ancestry, a fact reflected in her writing because she is proud of her ancestry. She has a great love for the culture and traditions of the Tsalagi peoples.
Janet obtained her master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Miami University of Ohio, but she looked to the literary world to enrich her life after retirement. She opened her own business as a literary agent. Not satisfied with the results of her labor, she began generating more of her own original writing.

Editing the manuscript for Cherokee Love led to a strong bond between her and Shirley G. Webb of Connecticut, her writing partner and dear friend. Utilizing the Internet and phone calls, they have co-authored Cherokee Love (iUniverse, Inc., Lincoln NB, 2004), Dance in the Rain (iUniverse Inc., 2005) and Song of Love (iUniverse, Inc., 2006), which comprise  “The Howell Women Saga”.  She and Shirley are already writing their next book, Echo of a Dream. This will begin a new series called "Choosing Love."  All of their writing is suitable for both adults and teenagers.
With Lathan Hudson (songwriter/humorist/author) and Sheryl Paige (song writer/singer), Janet edited and contributed to an anthology of nostalgic poetry, short stories, and essays written by residents of Sylacauga, Alabama’s "Mill Village." This book and the accompanying musical CD were released in 2007. The book is titled Green Plums, Dye-Ditch Water, and The Trash Pile Road.
Her works as a collaborator also include: House of Seven Mirrors, a fantasy short story with Lathan Hudson; and The Infamous Whale Saga with Lathan Hudson, author and reality show creator Roxanna Bain, and songwriter/author Johnny “Chance” Jones.
This web site includes a sample of her works which are included in her first solo book, Spilled Words, a collection of her poetry and short stories.

Janet has conducted frequent poetry readings and workshops for both teenagers  and adults at area libraries and coffee houses. She is a popular speaker for professional groups with her presentations regarding the technical aspects of writing poetry and fiction and gives readings, at times with Shirley, in schools and libraries in the Las Vegas area. Janet has represented other local poets at poetry workshops in both Boulder City and Las Vegas.
Janet's workshop entitled "The Marriage of Miss Fiction and Mr. Nonfiction" was presented by her as keynote speaker for the Judy Ann Reed Awards Banquet, Silvestri Junior High School, Las Vegas. She also hosted a panel presentation at Boulder City Library. Shirley and Dutch artist Sonja Rainbowwoman were also on the program. The topic was “Collaboration in Writing Historical Fiction” and showcased the works of all three women.
